My sister is here, and every time we come together there’s a calmness that comes into my life. We laugh and cry and talk about Mindy Kaling’s plastic surgery and if we believe we’ll ever make peace with our past. We talk about friends from high school and what we should do next with our hair, we catch up on family drama and spend moments of complete silence together in our own bubble of love and acceptance. Last night we were talking about why we believe our friendship works, how two seemingly opposite people could find ways to forge an unbreakable bond, one that has lasted over seventeen years. On paper, we couldn’t be more different, from our appearances to our careers, or the fact that she’s currently in a soul cycle class while I’m sitting at a nearby bakery enjoying this delicious spread, neither one of us better than the other, just different. I believe our friendship works because we’ve always had an extreme level of respect for each other, she believes it’s because we’ve never once felt judged by the other, at the end of the day it doesn’t matter which it is, we love each other because we do, and it will always be as simple as that. We’re honest with each other even when it hurts but are never cruel, we want each other to succeed and celebrate each other’s successes without jealousy or competition, and most importantly love each other for all the of the unique qualities that make us individuals. It’s in our quiet moments that I feel most grateful for her, for feeling known and understood and knowing that no matter the time or distance, we’ll always be family.
